Turning a daily practice into a book
The Isolated Illustrator
Client
Claire Delaney (self-published)
The brief
During New Zealand’s 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, Claire set herself a daily discipline: draw and write how she was feeling, and share it on social media. What started as a way to keep herself accountable grew into something bigger. People responded, shared their own experiences and began asking for drawings. Eventually her followers asked for a book, so they could remember that strange time. The challenge was to turn months of informal posts, raw writing and playful doodles into a book without polishing away the honesty that made people connect with them in the first place.
The outcome
The Isolated Illustrator is a 106-page book of Claire’s drawings, thoughts and connections from lockdown. Claire created the illustrations and words. Glenn designed the book and took it through to publication, keeping the loose, personal feel of the original posts. It’s available in print and as a downloadable PDF, and the drawings are also sold as originals and prints.
