Tom’s family
The brief
Tom’s family wanted to give him a simple record of his life, something his children and grandchildren could keep and return to. They commissioned the book as a surprise for his birthday. The challenge was to tell his story warmly and honestly, using the photographs that existed and finding another way to show the moments that had never been captured on camera.
The outcome
We designed a book that combines Tom’s family photographs with Claire’s illustrations. Where no photograph existed, an illustration took its place. These were especially useful for the funny stories, where a drawing could show the humour of the moment in a way a photograph never could. The family presented the book to Tom on his birthday, shortly before he passed away peacefully after a long and full life. It is now a keepsake for the generations who come after him.
